Nazywa się Pasikonik.
Lat: dwadzieścia kilka.
Narodowość: Wszechkrólestwo Polandii.
Zawód wykonywany: życiowy nomad.

Spotkałem go na lokalnej imprezie w Samaipacie w Boliwii. Dotarł tu autostopem z Brazylii dwa tygodnie wcześniej. Szybko poznał miejscowych “hipisów”. W zamian za jedzenie, miejsce do spania, czasem flaszkę, czasem coś jeszcze, zamieszkał w domku na zboczu doliny pośród mandarynkowych i cytrynowych sadów. Zajmuje się tym miejscem, sprząta ogród, karczuje rośliny. “Tu jest cudownie, tu spacer zaczyna się z pierwszym krokiem, nie jest tak, że musisz iść kilkaset metrów, czy kilometrów, do parku, żeby mieć spacer.”

Odwiedziłem go w “jego” domku. Opowiedział mi trochę o swoich legalnych i nielegalnych przygodach. Studiował leśnictwo i dziennikarstwo. Mieszkał w jaskiniach Andaluzji, mieszkał w leśniczówce w polskich puszczach, pracował w lasach Irlandii. Pisuje do jarocińskiej gazety.

Zostałem tam na noc. Cisza, czasem przybiegnie wegetariański pies sąsiadki (kilometr dalej), by poprzymilać się w nadziei na smaczny kąsek. Palimy w kominku, parzymy herbatę. Wino, mandarynki, chleb z twarogiem i pomidorem…

“Ja nie chcę stąd wyjeżdżać” – mówi. Ale serce ciągnie go gdzieś indziej. Nie chce wracać do Europy, pozamykał tam wszystkie sprawy. Poza jedną. “Wrócę tu, przyjadę tu z Nią.”

Rano bierzemy się do roboty. Piła, maczeta. Ścinamy chore drzewo – będzie na opał do kominka na kolejną zimną noc. Pasikonik stara się oszczędzać, właśnie wrócił z mini-operacji palca. Wlazł mu kolec z drzewa mandarynkowego. W tych warunkach byle drzazga może spowodować infekcję. Jego ręce są całe poranione. Na środkowym palcu prawej ręki opatrunek. To dlatego, że w pierwszym tygodniu ogarnięty hura-optymizmem i zapałem pracował bez rękawic. Mi też wchodzi drzazga. “Nie ignoruj małych, czarnych kropek” – ostrzega śmiejąc się.

“Ja chcę tak żyć” – mówi – “ja chcę być biedny”.

Luis Bergmann, 33, Brazilian. Works as a music composer/sound effects maker for computer games, movies and TV shows. Recently decided to quit his stationary life, so he quit his rented apartment, sold his books, furniture, etc., and started travelling while working remotely. He can do his job from anywhere with his notebook, telephone, a pair of headphones and an internet connection.

Luis also started an interesting project. With a pair of specially modified microphones that look like regular headphones (not the ones he has on the picture) he records sounds of the world around him and uploads them online to his audiolog.

Amory and Fernando. Before they turned 50 they decided not to wait till 65 to retire. They quit their “good jobs”, cut off all the strings holding them down, packed up everything they owned (which occurred to be 5 trucks full of stuff) and bought a piece of land on Chiloé Island. First they placed all their belongings in a big military tent, then they started to clear the land, piece by piece built up their new home. They reached the point that they were self efficient on their own land. But after 5 years they decided to do something else. They bought another piece of land and started their eco-friendly tourist site. Extremely gentle, adorable, positive persons.

If you want to spend some time close to the nature on a Chiloé Island you should contact them.

Walt Balenovich. The guy who travelled to 6 continents. Backpacker. In a blue wheelchair.

“My favourite question from airline staff prior to boarding is “Can you walk?” … “Uh, no”.”

“When I started backpacking alone I always worried about worst case scenarios, but human nature is great, and people really seem to want to help me out. The wheelchair and a smile really bring out the best in people, and smiles don’t need translation!”

“My first trip alone overseas was to Europe, and I landed in Holland, because it was flat, had the amenities I needed and they spoke English widely. I wanted to build up my confidence.”

“My problem is tree roots and rocks! I fell out of my chair in Zambia and broke my leg. A few blurry X-rays, an Egyptian doctor and a cast later, I was back on the planes for a brief 34 hours to come home. It was an experience.”

“The question I get asked the most is, “Where is your friend?”. Meaning my travel buddy or “handler” as one person asked.”

“Stairs are a big problem, as you can imagine, so I just ask a group of young people if they can help me up/down as needed. People all over the world trip all over themselves to help me out. It is so great and makes you feel that people all over the world are exactly the same… really friendly!”

“I just find a destination. I don’t worry about whether the wheelchair is going to be a problem or not. The world is not built with a ramp.”

“You just never know what adventure will happen next in a blue chair!”

Some say hostel life is half of the experience. Meeting people, hanging around in hammocks, having lunches, dinners, asados (bbqs), drinking wine, beer, lots of laughter. This makes you want to stay for another day in the place.

This is Michael. Aged 73. Now travelling around the world for 7 months.
